In the face of a global refugee crisis that has displaced millions of people around the world, IOC President Thomas Bach announced in 2015 that he would be hosting the first-of-its-kind Refugee Olympics to participate in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Announcing the creation of a team. In a historic participation, Olympic scholarships for refugee athletes were established.
The scholarship is fully funded by the IOC through the Olympic Solidarity Program for Refugee Athletes and managed by the Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF). 50 Refugee Athlete Scholarship holders were supported in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and in the end his 29 athletes from 12 sports were selected and competed as part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Tokyo 2020 Team .
A total of 75 refugee athletes are benefiting from scholarships for the Paris 2024 Games. They are from 12 of his countries, live in 24 host countries, and represent 14 sports.
To be eligible for the Refugee Athlete Support Program and ultimately be part of the Refugee Olympic Team, athletes must be competitive in their respective sport and be a refugee in their host country as recognized by the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR. .
ORF, which manages the Refugee Olympic Team, was established by the IOC to enable young people affected by displacement to develop through sport. Through its work, the Foundation has enabled more than 300,000 young people affected by displacement to access and benefit from sport.
