Yu, who had made a five-fold increase in weight prior to last year's ONE Championship Friday Night bout, was as surprised as anyone when the issue came up.
“Maybe I'm just not used to the weather or the new weigh-in schedule for the competition.” [Saturday] It’s an event,” Yu said. “As a fighter, I feel like it's my responsibility to make sure I'm at the right weight, so I regret losing weight. I'll try my best to do it properly next time.”
The 31-year-old said it won't be a long-term problem and plans to stay at atomweight. Yu was relentless against Fernandez, constantly coming forward and attacking throughout the three rounds of the fight.
While most fighters prefer to take a more cagey approach, Yu said his aggressive style came naturally.
“I fought exactly the same way from the first match,” she said. “I don't know where it is. [the style] I came from “
Yu was much healthier than his opponent and maintained a blistering pace throughout the match, which Fernandes could not cope with.
And while her stamina sets the Hong Konger apart from many martial artists, Yu said there is no secret behind her success.
“We were training in the afternoon,” she said. “But when we realized we had to fight early in the morning, we brought the whole section forward and started in the morning. I usually do a run to warm up and then work on my bag. . And sparring.”
The co-headliner for ONE Fight Night 20 was Alicia Rodriguez. The Brazilian successfully defended her atomweight Muay Thai title, extending her reign at the top of the division.
Every fighter dreams of winning a belt, but Yu recognized that there was a “distance” between himself and the champion.
“I know she's very strong and skilled,” Yu said. “I know that there is a distance between me and her.If I ever get a chance, I want to fight with all my might, with the spirit of a challenger to her, and make the most of what I have cultivated up until now.'' I think.”
