On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team selected Hall of Fame point guard Joe Joe White with the ninth overall pick out of the University of Kansas in the 1969 NBA Draft.
White played 10 seasons with the Celtics, winning two NBA championships with Boston in 1974 and 1976, and was Finals MVP in 1976. The former Jayhawk was selected to the All-Star Game seven times and twice to the All-Star Game during his time with the Celtics. He has earned numerous honors including the NBA team. The St. Louis native played in 488 consecutive games, setting a franchise record in the process, although injuries ultimately derailed the 1977-78 season.
He never recovered to being a high-level player and was traded to the Golden State Warriors for a first-round draft pick in 1979.
On this day in 1959, Celtics star Bob Cousy tied an NBA playoff record with 19 assists in a game against the Minneapolis Lakers.

Finally, this day also marks the birthday of tycoon Zaid Abdul Aziz (real name Donald A. Smith, before converting to Islam in 1976), who was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946.
