She's Captain America, America's leader in the race for the Olympic gold medal and one of the most dominant players in the center of the pitch.
It will be odd to see the U.S. women's national team lineup without Lindsey Horan. She has been a part of the senior team in some capacity since 2013, and when she plays against Australia on Wednesday (1 p.m., USA Network, Peacock), it will be her 153rd appearance at the senior level for the U.S.
Haaland plays for Lyon in the top division of French women's football and has been a dominant force both domestically and internationally, but what is she like on and off the pitch?
Here are five things to know about her and how she got to this point.
She was a high school All-American…
Although she did not play soccer in high school, attending Golden High School in Golden, Colorado, Horan played club soccer and was invited to play for the U.S. Under-17 youth national team. By the time she was a senior in high school, ESPN considered Horan the top prospect coming out of high school.
She didn't even play in college
Despite receiving a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina, considered one of the top women's programs in the country, Horan excelled so much that she forego college. Instead, the 18-year-old rookie was whisked away to France to play professionally for Paris Saint-Germain's women's team, scoring 46 goals in 58 appearances over four seasons with Paris.
She can play three different positions.
What makes Horan such a valuable player is her versatility. She has played three different roles for club and country as a central midfielder, an outside midfielder on the left wing and as a forward. All three roles seem to work well for the 30-year-old Horan, who has scored 35 goals for the U.S. since making her debut as an 18-year-old in the 2013 Algarve Cup.
She met her fiance at the office.
Horan is engaged to Tyler Heaps, an analyst for the United States Soccer Federation. The two met in 2016 while Heaps was accompanying the women's team, according to People magazine. Heaps proposed to Horan in 2023 after a seven-year relationship that began for work. It's unclear whether the US Soccer Federation's human resources department is upset about the affair.
She dominated domestic soccer.
Horan had a brief stint in the United States with the Portland Thorns, arguably the NWSL's top club, before moving to Lyon last summer. She led Portland to the NWSL title in 2017 and was named Most Valuable Player. The following year, she was named league MVP and a member of the NWSL's Best 11.
