The International Olympic Committee Future Hosts Committee is visiting sites in Salt Lake, Summit, Wasatch and Weber counties to research potential 2034 Olympic sites. The trip begins in Salt Lake on Wednesday, April 10th, moves to the Wasatch Back on Thursday, April 11th, visits Weber County in northern Utah on Friday, April 12th, and ends back in Salt Lake on Saturday, April 13th. The tour begins at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium, then hops aboard the Utah Department of Transportation's TRAX train to downtown's Delta Center.
Utah Olympic Committee spokesman Tom Kelly said the 2002 Olympics were the impetus for construction of the TRAX light rail and Front Runner. Utah's bid committee wanted to showcase the rails to emphasize the importance of transportation options and sustainability.
“The system is thriving right now, and we have great light rail in the valley. We also have a great regional transportation network with Front Runners,” Kelly said, adding, “We have great light rail in the valley. , we thought we'd give the IOC a little bit of a ride on the TRAX train.”
On Thursday, April 11, the committee will begin with a forum on Utah's Olympic history from 2002 to 2034. Next will be a Wasatch back trip to Utah Olympic Park's ski jumps and 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum. The group ends the day with a tour of Park City Mountain and Soldier Hollow.
“At Midway's Soldier Hollow, the IOC will have the opportunity to try out a biathlon shooting range with laser rifles, so it should be a fun stop,” Kelly said.
The competition on Friday, April 12 will begin in Weber County, where the committee will ride Snowbasin's John Paul Chairlift to tour the men's and women's downhill tracks. Then there's Utah Olympic Oval, a skating facility.
The visit concludes with a press conference in Salt Lake on Saturday, April 13th. There, the IOC Future Hosts Committee and the Utah Bid Committee will share their findings and discuss venue options. Kelly pointed out that this is more of a business discussion, as Salt Lake City has already been selected as a preferred site for the 2034 Games and is the only official venue under consideration.
The IOC will choose the host site for the 2034 Games on July 24, Pioneer Day in Utah.
