The Associated Press has further reporting on Wednesday's U.S. defeat:
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — The United States raced to a lead that was within the width of the goal bar against host France on a frenetic opening day of Olympic men's soccer competition.
Soon after, Alexandre Lacazette found the back of the net for the United States and Michael O'Leary added a second to give France a 3-0 victory.
“It's disappointing, on another day it could have been a goal,” said Djordje Mihajlovic, whose long-range shot bounced off the crossbar with the second half still goalless in a Group A match in Marseille. “I think the most important thing is that (we) need to recover emotionally because we were in the game for the first 70 minutes and we reacted very well after they scored.”
On the same day, Morocco beat Argentina 2–1, but the game was suspended for nearly two hours after fans invaded the pitch in added time, and the United States appeared to pull off another upset, beating France multiple times in the U.S. men's first Olympics since 2008.
“I can't really say anything to the guys. They were in the right position,” U.S. coach Marko Mitrovic said. “There's a feeling in my heart that we shouldn't have lost the way we did.”
The Americans never got closer to scoring than Mihajlovic's goal and France made the most of their good fortune, hitting back with fine strikes from Lacazette in the 61st minute and O'Ries in the 68th.
Loïc Bade added a third with a header in the 85th minute.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game. You guys never give up,” France coach Thierry Henry told U.S. reporters after the game. “The fighting spirit is always there for you. I believe you can bounce back. I know that. I played and coached in the MLS, so I know what you have.”
France ultimately took control thanks to two spectacular moments from former Arsenal striker Lacazette, who fired a low shot past U.S. goalkeeper Patrick Schulte from about 20 yards out.
Bayern Munich new signing Oliseh curled a shot from distance into the same corner.
Bade's header sealed the win as France moved above New Zealand, who had beaten Guinea 2-1, to top Group A.
“There were definitely some things that made us feel good going into the next two games,” Mihajlovic said.
