LONDON — Two-time Olympic gold medalist British track cyclist Katie Archibald will miss the Paris Games after breaking two bones in her leg in a freak accident.
Mr Archibald, 30, broke his tibia and fibula and dislocated his ankle after tripping down garden steps.
She also suffered significant ligament damage in Tuesday's accident and subsequently underwent surgery.
“I tripped on the steps in my garden and somehow dislocated my ankle, fractured my tibia and fibula and tore two ligaments,” Archibald posted on Instagram on Thursday, alongside a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed.
“I had surgery yesterday to put the bones back together and reattach the ligaments. Hopefully I'll be able to go home this afternoon.”
Archibald won gold for Great Britain in the team pursuit in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and then made her Olympic debut in Tokyo five years later, winning again in the women's madison with Laura Kenny.
This is her latest setback in the past two years.
