If Salt Lake City bids to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Ogden is slated to host at least one set of the 2034 Winter Olympics.
Alpine skiing and para-alpine skiing are both scheduled at Snowbasin Resort on the first list of potential venues announced Wednesday afternoon by the Salt Lake City-Utah Convention Committee.
Alpine skiing typically includes downhill, combined (downhill and slalom), and super-G competitions, which Snowbasin even hosted in the 2002 Olympics.
However, the Ogden Ice Sheet is not on the proposed list. The ice sheet on Weber State University's campus hosted curling in 2002, but that event is scheduled for the Salt Palace Convention Center on his list for 2034.
Wednesday's proposal is not final.
“Ten years is a long time, and event locations will evolve based on ownership changes, new sports, and new venue opportunities,” SLC-UT President Fraser Block said in a news release. “In-game events have also increased by nearly 40% since 2002, so we have time to evaluate optimal placement.”
The International Olympic Committee has named Salt Lake City as the only “preferred host site” for 2034, and the “election” to decide whether Utah will host the Olympics should be held at the Paris Summer Olympics in July.
Opening and closing ceremonies have also been proposed at the University of Utah's Rice-Eccles Stadium. The campus would also include housing for the Olympic Village. Medal Plaza is planned for Block 85, also known as the Park Place parking lot, across the street from Delta Center.
Block 85 and other locations downtown were scheduled to host new snowboarding and “big air” events that were not included in the 2002 Olympics.
Other proposed indoor venues include the Delta Center for figure skating and short track speed skating, Kearns Olympic Oval for long track speed skating, and the Maverick Center (West Valley City) and Peaks Ice Arena (Provo) for ice hockey. included.
Most of the remaining events (skiing, snowboarding, bobsledding, etc.) are proposed to return to Park City's two ski areas and Olympic Park, while cross country and biathlon are proposed to return to Midway's Soldier Hollow.
