Nate Diaz hasn't always had good luck with decisions, but in his second fight against Jorge Masvidal, the referee was on his side.
In a UFC 244 “BMF” championship rematch, this time held in a boxing ring at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Diaz gained some revenge over his rival by winning by majority decision after 10 heated rounds. Masvidal defeated Diaz by doctor's stoppage after inflicting a large cut above Diaz's right eye.
The second bout saw a fair amount of punching back and forth, but it was a bloodless affair highlighted by Diaz's relentless volume and well-timed power punches from Masvidal. Ultimately, Diaz was the better fighter, according to the official scorecard, which you can see below.
Referee Fernando Villarreal scored the bout a draw at 95-95, reflecting how hard the fight was fought, but judges Zachary Young and Rudy Barragan saw the margin of error as being much larger, scoring it 98-92 for Young and 97-93 for Barragan, both of which were enough to award the win to Diaz.
In an interview immediately after the fight, Masvidal said he felt he had done enough to win and that the fact that the fight took place in Diaz's home state of California may have influenced the judges.
Either way, it's an official win for Diaz, who is now 1-1 as a professional boxer after losing to influencer Jake Paul in August 2023.
