Notre Dame held an open practice at the rubber practice field this morning as well. The media was able to tour his first four terms. Here are some observations from today's practice, focusing on the offense.
*** The offense went through a brief period of making plays on the air. It was the first team, the second team, and the third team. riley leonard did not participate in these periods, but did throw in some work with the receivers when broadcasting routes.
*** The first team quarterback is steve angeli And the running back Jadarian Price. The recipient is chris mitchell (Z), jayden greathouse (slot) and mika gilbert (X).The tight end cooper flanagan. Attack line from left to right: charles jagsa, Pat Coogan, ashton craig, billy schlaus, tosh baker.
*** The team's second quarterback is kenny minchey And the running back jeremiah love. The recipient is cam williams (Z), K.K. Smith (slot) and Dion Colzi (X).The tight end Eli Raridon. Attack line from left to right: sullivan abshire, rocco spindler, sam pendleton, Christopher Tellek, Amir Wagner.
*** The team's third quarterback is CJ Carr And the running back Aneyas Williams. The receiver and tight end were walk-ons. Attack line from left to right: style press cod, peter jones, Joe Otting, Tai Chan, Anthony Knapp.
*** All quarterbacks were relatively sharp during the tempo period. Angeli threw a great corner throw to Flanagan and Kerr threw a great ball up the middle. Angeli threw some great corner balls during his route on-air period. During his time at RVA, Leonard also had sharpness and was able to fly the ball better. He was even more powerful today than we saw earlier in spring training, and that was true in two consecutive practice sessions. After the surgery, he seems to be able to drive better on his hind legs. Kerr is starting to look pretty confident in practice and throwing the ball. You could tell early on that he was still learning a lot, and of course he's still learning, but he's more confident in himself. He's more loose when he's working, quick and decisive when he's pitching during RVA and tempo periods. Minchey was probably the sharpest of the QBs today, but he also had a good session during RVA. His ball placement wasn't as sharp as some other players, but he was solid.
*** The offense and defense did a one-on-one space drill where the receiver caught a pass and went up the field, and the defender met the receiver in space. They didn't tackle, but you could tell when a defender was in a position to tackle an opponent. I continue to be impressed with how good our offensive players are in space. The defense as a whole needs to attack from better angles, but part of the issue is the speed with which most of the offensive players get to their spots and how quickly they can make the cuts.
*** We continue to be impressed with our sophomore receivers jayden greathouse. He's been very confident in what he's doing this spring and moving around like a veteran. He’s up front in every practice, plays fast, has confidence in and out of breaks, and is very good at catching the ball. Greathouse has shown the ability to force defenders into space with sharp, sudden movements, and his ball skills continue to shine through in practice.
*** Today was the first time I was able to see it since the opening practice. chris mitchell I really loosened up and remembered how fast he was. Not only does he show really good vertical speed, Mitchell today impressed as a route runner and with his sudden movement when he has the ball in space.new student mika gilbert Really emerging as a potential difference maker for the Irish. He is working with the first team today and has shown great confidence and certainty as a route runner. Gilbert was smooth as a route runner during today's practice, catching everything in his vicinity.
*** jaden harrison I didn't practice today jayden thomas continues to be limited.
*** The offensive line spent most of their practice working on double teams and going on sled runs, which was good to see. The emphasis is on moving the foot through contact, which is very important for this line and is an area that needs a lot of improvement compared to 2023.
*** One observation that intrigued me was; rocco spindler He spent the entire practice playing on the same side at left guard. Pat Coogan. This was true during the team period described above, but it was also true during training. During sled training, the left and right guards were separated, and Coogan and Spindler were together. billy schlaus I was across from them. If you want to jump to conclusions a little, this shows that Schlaus has made the expected jump and secured the position, and now Spindler and Coogan will be competing for the other guard position. It may mean that it will become. .
