Northland Pines girls soccer passes through three lakes
This game felt like an organized scrimmage and practice against the other team. This season, we have been practicing outdoors using a wide soccer field. We just finished spring break and the girls returned for three days of practice on Tuesday before the Friday night game. Then Mother Nature intervened and took away the girls' practice on Wednesday, leaving them with only two nights to prepare for the game. Due to Mother Nature and the recent snowstorm, our home field is not ready to play. As a result, we have asked very generous neighboring communities, school districts, and opposing football coaches to open their doors and fields and allow us to play on the turf field at Mike Webster Stadium in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. He gave me permission. We have 20 of her girls ready to play against Three Lakes in the first varsity game for both teams. Many players moved to new positions and played throughout the season trying to find solid combinations. We were looking for someone to replace senior center midfielder Cassidy Sternhagen. We knew her physicality, aggression and ability to distribute the ball were irreplaceable, so there was going to be a lot of trial and error in this match. We played in a 4-1-4-1 formation and had possession for most of the game. We played very rigorously and had a lot of girls scoring their first minutes at varsity level. Midway through the first half, Emma Weber pushed the ball into the goalmouth from a corner kick, and the aggressive Ava Gaetano scored her first international goal, giving the Pines a 1-0 lead at halftime. In half, it was a classroom-like atmosphere, with a lot of teaching between the two coaches and a former Pines player and volunteer coach. We came out with more urgency and put more shots on net. Three Lakes made four or five really great saves to keep the game going. Midway through the second half, when our centre-back came forward with the ball and made a pass, and the rest of the defenders were ball-watching, a Three Lakes defender intervened and intercepted an errant pass from Pines. Intercepted and the ball was played behind the defender and Three Lakes. The Lakes forwards raced for the ball and placed the only shot in the bread basket of sophomore goalie Samantha Nampel to seal the game and seal their first win of the season against their hometown opponent.
