LAS VEGAS – Deiveson Figueiredo believes he has done enough to earn a shot at the title.
Figueiredo (23-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) earned his second win in the bantamweight division against former champion Cody Garbrandt (14-6 MMA, 9-6 UFC) at UFC 300 on Saturday. .
The former flyweight champion talked about his expectations for more in his new weight class.
“It was a great night,” Figueiredo told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter during the UFC 300 post-fight press conference. “I got a win over a guy with a very (big) name, Cody Garbrandt, a very tough guy. This shows what the next chapter of my career is going to be like. .”
Petr Yan was mentioned as Figueiredo's next opponent, but he dismissed the idea. The Brazilian athlete is only aiming for the gold medal, even though he is currently in the heavy division.
“I'm a former champion in other divisions. I've been winning in this division and I want to fight for a championship,” Figueiredo said. “The (flyweight title) fight with (Brandon) Moreno was wrong in my view, so I think he deserves to fight for the championship next.”
Figueiredo is ready to jump into any opportunity. Bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley is expected to face Merab Dvalishvili next, and Figueiredo would be happy to face either of them next.
“I'm 100 percent. I'm ready to fight again, whether it's Sean O'Malley, Merab, whoever it is,” Figueiredo said. “No matter what my husband decides, I'm going to participate.”
