The Newsmax host was outraged when he found out about the existence of a gay American flag football league.
Right-wing television personality Rob Schmidt was outraged to learn that the NFL team, the Buffalo Bills, was sponsoring the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL).
Flag football is a non-contact version of the gridiron game in which players make tackles by pulling on flags worn around their waists.
The league is part of a non-profit sports organization that aims to promote progressive social causes through American flag football. The former Fox News host is clearly not a fan of the sponsorship, as can be seen from his foul-mouthed response. Rob Schmidt Tonight Wednesday (June 19th).
“I thought watching football would help me escape the Pride Month hype, but apparently that's not the case,” he said.
After explaining his story, Schmidt seemed perplexed that sports organizations have been more accepting of LGBTQ+ people than he has: “I, I, I literally asked the producers, and I was like, 'Is this really just a fabrication?'”
“Now there's a National Gay Flag Football League. Why? Why, that's the question I get asked a lot in this country. I have to go find my own country.”
PinkNews can state categorically that being gay doesn’t mean you can’t love sport.
While Schmidt goes around looking for “his country” that doesn’t allow LGBTQ+ people to enjoy sports, the Buffalo Bills will be busy promoting inclusivity.
“We are pleased to bring inclusive flag football to Buffalo with the support of the Buffalo Bills,” said NGFL Commissioner Joel Horton. “With this exciting addition, we join 27 other cities in the [more than] “The National Gay Flag Football League has 4,000 players, including straight allies.”
The NGFFL has been around since 2002. The Bills' sponsorship is just an expansion of the league.
“We're pleased to support the NGFFL alongside the NFL and other clubs in the league,” said Bills vice president of community impact Michelle Roberts. “We look forward to expanding the NGFFL's impact in our community.”
