The upcoming “Shadow of the Erdtree” DLC for “Elden Ring” will feature several new weapon types available for Tarnished to acquire.
Shadow of the Erdtree is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated releases of 2024. It will add a new area that's bigger than Limgrave, as well as introduce eight new weapons for players to use in combat.
Thanks to a recent preview, we now know more about all of the new weapon types in the Elden Ring DLC, and here's everything we know about the new weapons in Shadow of the Erdtree.
8 New Weapon Types in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Eld Tree DLC
Speaking to Famitsu, Miyazaki had fans excited about Elden Ring's combat: “Eight new weapons have been added, and of course there will be additions to existing weapons,” he said.
Beyond that interview, a series of previews recently shared with influencers and media revealed some things Miyazaki didn't mention: Here's a list of all the new weapon types appearing in Shadow of the Erdtree:
Long sword: Odachi
The odachi sword featured in Elden Ring, which director Hayao Miyazaki described as a “fairly classic large Japanese sword,” appears to function as a sort of greatsword variation on the katana. The Elden Ring base game also features Yura's naginata, which is much larger than the other swords, but doesn't have its own classification like these new swords.
This is great news for players who love the aesthetics and built-in bleed of the Katana but want a bit more power, and the increased size will hopefully provide more Poise damage.
Duel Shield
One of the eight new weapon types coming to Elden Ring's DLC is what Miyazaki calls a “Dueling Shield,” and this new weapon type actually makes an appearance in the trailer, where you can see it in action during a fight against Mesmer the Impaler.
It appears to be a long, rectangular shield with two blades protruding from either end, resembling the popular twin-bladed weapon. Apparently the weapon has offensive and defensive powers, which makes sense.
Reverse Sword
The translation of this weapon is debated, with some calling it “reverse hand sword” and others “reverse grip.” Its function is without question.
These reverse-hand or reverse-grip swords – held with the blade extending outwards towards the elbow – are seen in action in the trailer and appear to be a fighting style that requires some dexterity to use.
Throwing a dagger
Yes, you can already craft certain throwing knives, but Miyazaki explains that the throwing knife will be an entirely new weapon that you can permanently equip. Apparently, this weapon will “turn all your attacks into throws.”
Like the other weapon types mentioned by Miyazaki, the Tarnished can be seen in the trailer as he hurls it repeatedly at enemies, appearing to be another new weapon with an emphasis on dexterity.
martial arts
One of the most exciting new weapons in the Elden Ring DLC confirmed by Miyazaki is the Martial Arts. While not technically a weapon, the Tarnished will be similar to Monks from other RPGs.
It's unclear whether any gear is required for this fighting style, but the elaborate spin kicks shown in the trailer are a highlight, and players are already plotting their own brawl with the Hora Lux.
Perfume bottle
If you're familiar with the Perfumer enemy from Elden Ring, you'll recognize this: this new weapon allows you to scatter elemental dust around you with no resource limits.
You can damage enemies with poison, burn them with fire, shock them with lightning, and more — and there may be other attribute types that have yet to be revealed — which introduces a new fighting style that focuses on targeting enemy weak spots.
The powerful attack with the Perfume Bottle scatters dust in a 360 degree arc around the player, making it perfect for dealing with large mobs.
Beast Claw
While the Beast Claws are similar to Elden Ring's existing fist and claw weapons, these new additions offer players some entirely different moves. picture What's shown off are incredibly erratic and agile fighting patterns that look surprisingly stylish.
Its fast attacks make it extremely useful for inflicting status effects such as Bleeding, Frostbite, and Scarlet Rot, although of course it remains to be seen whether you'll have access to these.
Light Great Sword
New to the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, this greatsword variant can unleash multiple attacks with a single button press, according to content creators such as Iron Pineapple. Fast and powerful, the light greatsword allows for a variety of stance attacks thanks to the Ashes of War.
A successful guard counter will result in three slashes instead of one, though it may still lack the usual Poise damage of a standard greatsword.
These are all new weapon types that will appear in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, along with a throwable jar and a rapid-fire crossbow, which appear to be variations on existing weapons.
