Nepal will return to boxing with hopes of winning a medal at the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan this month.
Nepal won a historic silver medal at the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships held in Bangkok in January last year. This tournament was the country's first final of such a huge tournament. Nepal took another impressive and historic step in 2023 as one of Nepal's female boxers, Anjani Teri, reached the quarter-finals of the Women's World Boxing Championship in New Delhi.
Boxers born in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 will be eligible to compete in the U22 age group in Astana, Kazakhstan. Boxers born in 2006 and 2007 are eligible to participate in the youth generation group of this particular continental event.
Seven U22 boxers, including three girls from Nepal, have registered for this year's first ASBC Championship. Nepal has already planned two national tournaments this year, and more tournaments are expected to be held soon in the developing boxing nation.
The biggest name in the team is Susma Tamang, the historic silver medalist from the last ASBC Asia U22 Boxing Championships. The female minimum weight (48kg) boxer also represented Nepal at the Asian Games, where she won all the national competitions in the past two years.
Ramisha Shrestha has six years of experience in the sport and will be competing in the women's light flyweight (50kg) category in her next tournament. Trisha Jebeg won the bronze medal at the 2023 ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships and is aiming for her second podium in Astana.
Upreti Lal Prasad (48kg), Chirin Wangdi Sherpa (54kg), Sourav Mali (57kg) and Manoj Tamang (80kg) are Astana-registered U22 male boxers. Chirin Wangdi Sherpa participated in the recent ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships, and other athletes have also performed well in domestic competitions. The only youth boxer registered is Swastika Thiruva who joined the national team over three years ago and she has a medal from her ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships.she celebrated her 18th birthdayth She will celebrate her birthday in January this year and will compete in the women's youth featherweight (57kg) in Astana.
