Native connections to martial arts
George Lepine (Plains Cree-Assiniboine) holds 6th degree black belts in Taekwondo and Hapkido, which are the roots of his unique martial arts. This martial arts is rooted in the traditional fighting style of the Plains Cree people. Established in 1997, the martial arts system called Okichitaw includes martial arts training and weapons such as knives, tomahawks, and gun stocks. Another Native martial arts expert, Chevon Marks (Muscogee), is retiring from a long martial arts career after decades of teaching. Marks, 76, is a member of the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame, has two doctorates in martial arts science and philosophy, and is a master of multiple Chinese, Filipino, and Korean fighting styles. He recently held a women-only martial arts seminar. Join Native America Calling to hear Lepine and Marks talk about dedication, decades of teaching, and incorporating Native philosophy and methods into martial arts.
