Colby Covington may have gotten himself into a corner with his recent war of words with Ian Machado Gary. Either way, former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier feels that way.
Covington, the former interim UFC welterweight champion, doesn't like to make friends in MMA, and Garry is no exception, as he's risen to prominence as a contender as of late. Covington, who recently lost his title to champion Leon Edwards in a tough decision at UFC 296 in December, has turned all eyes on the undefeated Irish star, who is 14-0.
Despite calling out “The Future” at length in the video, Covington tried to argue that he didn't need to fight an upstart like Gary in the rankings. The two sides have exchanged shots in recent months and now it looks like the promotion will just wait until the fight is official. Covington has already lost three times with undisputed title chances, and after recent bouts, Cormier sees Garry as the perfect fight for both of them. Now that “Chaos” has gotten to the point where he's entertaining it, he may have to stand by his story one last time to protect his brash personality and his reputation.
“Colby has to fight him,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “One thing about Colby Covington is that, for sure, I'm a guy who gets along well with Covington. I like Colby Covington. Colby Covington plays a role that annoys a lot of people. I think so, but I like Colby.
“The one thing about Colby was that despite his words and annoyance and the way he made fun of people, he always showed up to fight anyone. There was never a matchup he said no to. . I think we're now at the point in terms of Ian Garry where we have to fight him.”
If the 36-year-old Covington's past five fights are any indication of his status, he's always one fight away from a title shot. Covington, who is 2-3 in his last five fights (17-4 overall), has two recent wins as part of a one-fight “streak” as he looks to earn a title shot against Kamaru Usman and the aforementioned Edwards. Ta.
Cormier was able to defeat Gary and keep Covington in the title picture even after going through the worst period of his career. If Edwards relinquishes the title by the time a potential matchup occurs, that would only make that more likely. After all, Covington wasn't one to talk his shit or not show up.
Well, some might argue with that in the case of his last fight, but he still made it to the Octagon. It has an important meaning in the “DC” book.
“I have to fight him right now, personally and professionally, for all the insults and things he says, because that's what he's always done,” Cormier said. “He fought with Kamaru Usman when he said something about Kamaru Usman in a weird way or a disrespectful way. He fought with Leon Edwards when he talked about Leon Edwards. About who he is. When speaking, he fought them if it was an option.
“Chel Sonnen was one too. When Chell was rude to Anderson. [Silva], he fought him. After all, if you take on this role or play the villain of everyone's story, the villain always has to get his comeuppance, or what they call it. A place where one day you will have to step up to the sword and fight. He has to step onto that battlefield and show he's ready to keep his word. I think we're there now with the Colby Covington and Ian Garry contracts. ”

This was the first time I got out of a fight and broke the cartilage in my ribs and couldn't move for a week. Last Thursday, my surgery went very well. Please keep in mind that all of my matches that have been canceled in the past have been the opponent's fault.

I mean, it's Covington that's interesting. intention I'll fight if Garry tells me to. It doesn't matter what he said. It is completely contradictory to impose regulations on him while calling him a “company employee.'' I'm probably already overthinking these antics. Match them up and go from there. thank you.
