Morning Report: Colby Covington disparages 'Circus Clown Show' Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz boxing rematch

Colby Covington will not be participating in the upcoming boxing rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.

Two of the welterweight division's biggest stars of the past five years are looking to do things outside of the MMA cage. After retiring last April after a four-game losing streak, Masvidal (35-17) couldn't stay away from the fight. Meanwhile, his nemesis Diaz made his boxing debut in August last year. They are scheduled to hold Part 2 of the 1st BMF Showdown on June 1st in Los Angeles.

Masvidal and Diaz are two of the most prominent figures in martial arts, but their first meeting was filled with nothing but respect. Masvidal won by third-round TKO following a doctor stoppage. The same can't be said about Masvidal and Covington's history and fights, making them penultimate matchups for each.

The fierce rivalry between the two will never end at this point. Other than “Gamebred,” Covington was never impressed with Diaz either. Diaz lost a unanimous decision to Jake Paul in his boxing debut. Ultimately, Covington suggests avoiding future pay-per-view events.

“I put my money into the fans,” Covington said. socast. “Nobody wants to see this fight. They're not boxers (lol). We'll give the money back to the fans. It's a shame we have to pay for this circus clown show. This is not a fight.”

“These are not even two boxers. These are two mixed martial artists in the boxing ring. So I would like to apologize to the fans and refund their money immediately.”

Boxing in general will be a “dead sport” in 2024, according to Covington, a three-time undisputed UFC title challenger. Matchups like the Masvidal vs. Diaz rematch only fuel that notion of “chaos,” especially after watching Paul's aforementioned career. Created.

Diaz, 38, was Paul's fourth and most recent MMA-based opponent inside the squared circle. Prior to that victory, Paul knocked out former welterweight champions Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley, and scored decision wins over Woodley and Anderson Silva. However, Covington doesn't consider any of those fights to be legitimate, which is why he thinks Diaz won the fight.

“He just wanted to dive for money,” Covington said. “His UFC career is over. We All-Stars couldn't hack it in the UFC anymore. So he had to take a dive.”

Since Diaz, Paul has moved on to boxing-focused opponents, earning first-round finishes over Andre August and Ryan Borland. He will next clash with boxing champion Mike Tyson in July of this year.

Covington has his sights set on a potential matchup with Ian Machado Garry as his next move in MMA. But if he gets attacked by Paul, there's nothing he can do about it.

When asked if he intended to fight Paul, Covington said, “Yeah.” “But he never wants to fight me. He only wants to fight guys like Mike Tyson, guys in their 40s and 60s who are over the hill.”

“Jake knows. I've seen Jake in Miami. He knows who his daddy is. He knows who the King of Miami is.”
