SEASON — Needing some insurance between the pipes, Monterey Bay FC signed former Alisal High goaltender Fabian Nares to a 25-day contract.
Nares, 29, was called up after the United Soccer League announced the suspension of goalkeeper Carlos Herrera and midfielder Walmer Martinez following an incident following the game against the Oakland Oaks.
The Union remained undefeated on the road this spring, defeating Oakland 1-0 on April 6 on a late goal from Chase Boone.
Herrera received a red card and automatic one-game suspension, and Martinez will miss Monterey Bay FC's next four USL games, starting Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Las Vegas Lights at Cardinale Stadium.
Nares spent last season as the goalie for Monterey Bay FC2, helping the team win the Northern California Division championship in his first season in 2023.
The 5-foot-8 Nares earned Gavilan Division All-League honors as a senior at Alisal College and played at Hartnell College.
He will serve as backup to Anthony Schiaha, who recorded 14 saves and two shutouts in Union's 2-1-1 start in the USL.
