Kelvin Gastelum vs Daniel Rodriguez Lowdown
Kelvin Gastelum (17-9-1) continues to challenge in his own division. Shawn Brady (2023) brought him back to welterweight, but it was a terrible matchup. He lost power, lost grappling, and finally surrendered in the kimura. This was followed by a “Fight of the Night” win against Chris Curtis (2023) by unanimous decision, and now a UFC record of 12-9-1.
Daniel Rodriguez (17-4) is also coming off a crushing defeat. He faced Ian Machado “Garry” last year in a stand-up knockout in the first round, his only fight. This is his second straight win after an impressive four-fight win streak came to an end with a submission loss to Neil Magny (2022), dropping his UFC record to 7-3.
Kelvin Gastelum vs Daniel Rodriguez Predictions
This is one of many great matchups on the Saudi Arabia card. They are both big, tough and talented fighters with incredible punching power. Gastelum is also a great wrestler, but like Rodriguez he relies on his boxing, so expect a stand-up battle.
The former middleweight boasts a speed advantage and will likely rely on fake-outs to set up his shots and land lightning-fast one-two punches. Rodriguez is also a dangerous southpaw and will be extremely confident as he doesn't have to worry about distance or grappling.
Gastelum has the speed, experience and wrestling skill to have a comfortable night, but he will rarely put it all together and Rodriguez's durability will keep him fighting until the final bell.
It would be surprising to see Gastelum have the upper hand, as the difference between the two fights is minimal. We expect Gastelum to win by a small margin, but a worthy option is Rodriguez.
prediction: Gastelum (via decision)
Value Bets: Rodriguez wins by decision
