Remember, all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
With his MMA career possibly on the line, and a felony aggravated assault charge hanging over his head, Mason ‘Sticks’ Hibbs slid into my Instagram DMs to say he didn’t pull a 9mm on his mother during his 23rd birthday party over an unpaid bar tab.
There’s little doubt that many in Memphis are chattering over what went down July 9 at TJ Mulligans bar where Hibbs was out with friends, his mother and her boyfriend for drinks and food to celebrate the MMA brawler’s birthday.
What happened after the drinks and food began to flow is up for debate, but, for Hibbs, he doesn’t agree with the way he’s being portrayed in a police report obtained by the Memphis CBS affiliate.
Freshly bonded out of jail, Hibbs contacted OutKick to set the record straight.
Sticks doesn’t disagree that he and his mother have a history of “past arguments” but he contends that everything was going fine until he and some buddies tried to leave the party.
“My buddy took a video of all of us dancing and hanging out and she [Hibbs’ mother] “She was mad because she didn't like him,” Mason (who is 2-7 in his MMA career and has lost four straight) told OutKick. “She started yelling at me, telling me I should take the video down.”
Mason said she tried to keep the peace and told her mother that her friend wasn't recording her. “At that point, we were just going to leave,” she added.
Did mixed martial artist Mason Hibbs upset his mother over an unpaid bar bill?
Hibbs and friends head to their car, where more trouble begins. The son does not dispute that there was a duel.
“I got in my car and left. The weapon was in the car. No weapon was used,” Hibbs continued. “I brought my backpack, which I always carry, into the car and put the weapon back in the backpack. She happened to be there as I was putting it back.” [the backpack].
“She said I pointed it at her and said I was going to use it. Why would I do that? She's my mother. No matter how much you piss me off, I would never do that.”
At that point, Stix said, her mother began saying he had threatened her with a gun, which prompted her mother's boyfriend to join the conversation. “He said, 'Mason, that's the worst,'” Stix recalled.
“At that point I just couldn't take it anymore. I sat down and told him to go inside somewhere. I told him, look, I'm not here to fight.”
Words were exchanged, things got heated, and yes, there was a fistfight on his 23rd birthday, but Stix says it was his mother's boyfriend who landed the first punch. They both fell to the ground, and next thing Stix was pulling him out from under the two men.
MMA fighter Mason Hibbs ran off to pay the bar bill on his 23rd birthday, and did that spark some drama with his mother?
Hibbs vehemently denies that any drinks from TJ Mulligans were missing from the bar bill. “I paid my own bill. My bill was paid,” Hibbs said with certainty. “My two friends who were there didn't get their bill paid because they were planning on coming back. She was yelling at me.”
Hibbs sent a screenshot of the bill he allegedly paid at the bar, saying the food was good and not denying having a few drinks.
“I gave him $30 in cash and put $15 on the card,” the Louisiana native said in his defense.
Why was your mom playing the sheriff role? Why did you make such a fuss?
“Because she lives in that bar,” his son retorted.
Can this mother and son's argument be resolved, as adults, and can these two get through this difficult time together?
Look, there are no winners in this story. Stix may lose her MMA career. Mother and son are feuding. The boyfriend reportedly got hot eyes and lips during a ground-and-pound bout.
In other words, it would be a miracle if this family could get together for Thanksgiving in 2024.
“Given the situation, I have no intention of speaking to her because I never want to be in that situation again,” Hibbs said of the possibility of resolving the matter and moving forward with her life. “I could be facing felony charges for something I didn't do.”
What's next for Sticks?
According to Tapology, the man who allegedly embezzled from a bar account is scheduled to face Scott Calvert, who has a 4-3 record, in the flyweight division on Saturday, August 10th at Attitude 31 in West Memphis, Arkansas.
So far, the arrest has not affected Stix's mixed martial arts career, and he hopes to keep it that way. “There's no need for it to come to light that this guy pulled a weapon on his mother over a $20 bar bill. That didn't happen,” Stix concluded.
