Rener Gracie A leader of the clan believed to be the creator of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he has been teaching officers a new restraint technique that he claims is safer than a chokehold, and he demonstrated it on one of our guys to drive the point home.
The mixed martial arts legend appeared on “TMZ Live” on Tuesday and revealed that heSafewrap“…He put on a sort of exhibition by deploying it to the TMZ staff, who acted as guinea pigs for the demonstration.”
Renner is now teaching the technique to the NYPD, explaining that it can be used to safely and effectively subdue non-compliant suspects, even if they are armed.
NYPD officers train with Renner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Eric GarnerThe event, which marks the anniversary of 's death, is especially timely given the date.
Remember, Garner died after being placed in a police chokehold in July 2014. The controversial practice is banned by the Eric Garner Chokehold Act, but police watchdog groups say the number of complaints about police chokeholds is still on the rise.
As Renner explains and demonstrates, his “Safewrap” technique differs from a chokehold in that it restrains a suspect from the side, as opposed to forcing the suspect's chest to the ground to restrict his breathing, as in the Garner case.
Renner says his method doesn't compress the lungs or diaphragm like a chokehold does, and the SafeWrap is very quick at getting someone to the ground and holding them there.
Though the initiative was originally designed for hospital patients, it appears to be working with police departments as well, and Renner said he plans to work with more departments in the future.
