Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists. We shine a light on fights from around the world that have been overlooked in this hectic age of daily MMA shows.
We all know that the UFC touts a free speech absolutist policy (eye-opening), but one thing you rarely see is a fighter criticizing individual judges after a win. That's true. Fighters are usually relieved to get a decision and don't talk about it in detail until later when they talk to the media. But sometimes it is also necessary to tear it out quickly.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Cameron Smotherman.
(Thank you so much for everything @Barrel La Piena For their weekly best list, K.O. and submissions, and @Grabaka_Hitman They have uploaded many of the clips you see here. If you can, please follow and join us on Patreon. )
Cameron Smotherman vs. Ryan Kuse
Michael Aswell vs. Nate Richardson
Cody Steele vs. Alejandro Martinez
Lester Buttress Jr. vs. Garrett Foster
Cameron Cash vs. Mario Suazo
“Damage wins fights,” Smotherman said after scoring a mixed decision against Ryan Cuse. “That judge, 30-27, asshole. I hope he resigns. Damage wins fights, and if that's the standard, I'm going to win any day.”
The judge in question was Chance Williams, who awarded Kuse all three rounds in a classic grappler vs. striker battle. The striker in this case was Smotherman, and while his takedowns and ground defense were tested, the damage he did in his stand-up at least should have ensured he won the third round. However, Williams didn't think so, resulting in a verbal abuse of Smotherman in his post-game interview.
I don't know if this will endear Smotherman to promotions like the UFC (he has already earned one spot on the Contender Series) or if they will see this as a red flag, but if he It's definitely a character. MMA needs character.
Also from Fury FC 89 (available on UFC Fight Pass), Michael Aswell defeated Nate Richardson in the main event to win the vacant featherweight title.
The 23-year-old Aswell improved to 9-1 with the win. I hope he can get a little more seasoning before he gets called up for a big promotion.
Less experienced, but perhaps more ready for a call-up to the big show, is undefeated welterweight Cody Steele.
We've already featured Steele several times on Missed Fists, but his grappling is rarely his signature. Instead, Steele took full advantage of being able to punch people in the face under MMA rules, amassing a 6-0 record with 3 KOs/TKOs. The 29-year-old has dropped down to 155 pounds, and he would be a welcome addition to any lightweight or welterweight division.
If you're looking for a submission, how about Lester Buttress Jr.'s 14-second armbar on Garrett Foster?
Add this to the “Failed Flying Attacks” pile. Buttress' slick jiu-jitsu and Foster's questionable decision-making. Perhaps there's a reason why Foster is currently 0-4 as a pro (all by knockout or submission).
Cameron Cash could have taken the buttress one step further by turning Mario Suazo's sloppy takedown attempt into a match-ending dulce choke.
Zhang Qinghe vs. Sundet Aytukul
Mario Souza vs. Thiago Moreira
Krikor Barkian vs. Jason Jones
Ilya Varbarsky vs. Maxime Dupin
I cannot express this politely. Combatants were capturing bodies all over the world.
Start your journey at Octagon 57 in Almaty, Kazakhstan (free replay available on YouTube). There, Zhang Qinghe hit his KO shot with his right hand, brushing aside Aitukul's flying knee.
It was so clean that Chan had time to come forward and check on Aitukul's condition and stop himself from following. It has a luxurious finish.
At a fight music show in Curitiba, Brazil, Mario Souza finished off a retreating Chago Moreira with a knee kick.
We have this week's Humpty Dumpty fall winner, folks. If you want more from the event, subscribe to TrillerTV to watch the fight music show.
In amateur action, Krikor Barkian spun to victory at the Up Next Fighting event in San Bernardino, California.
Notice how Balkian defended Jason Jones' initial attack. He saw something there. When Jones came forward again, his backhand went all out. He then inserted a lead foot right past Jones and obliterated him.
In the 79th round of the MMA series in Russia, Ilya Varbarsky cut off Maxime Dupin with a sharp elbow, forcing him to retreat. Then something like this happened.
Slice on the inside or boot on the outside. There are no good options in the fight.
Monika Kucinic vs. Sofia Bagishvili
We interrupt this KO parade for a brief submission break, courtesy of Monika Kucinic.
Kucinic made a thrilling comeback in his homeland at Brave CF 81 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After somehow surviving an early armbar and triangle choke, the strawweight prospect turned the tables on Sofia Bazishvili with a stunning armbar in her third bout.
Bagishvili has attracted the oddity of a missed fist in the past, once submitting an opponent in what could be described as a slip-and-slide on a rain-soaked mat, and once refereeing at KSW. had to point out his opponent's injury. his debut. For better or worse, I don't think this is the last we'll hear from Bagishvili or Kucinic.
Lu Kai vs. Asirjan Tasket
Everyone is doing BMF these days, and the Jue Cheng King boys are no exception. In the main event of this Tuesday's JCK Fight Night 83, Lu Kai and Asyljan Tasket threw down, but Lu broke through with a left button, causing Tasket to spiral.
If this is what Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje have accomplished, we have yet another reason to be thankful for their existence.
Walbel dos Anjos vs Paulo Enrique
Let's end with something even more body-shakingly amazing.
At Centurion FC 19 in São Paulo, Brazil, Wolver dos Anjos stormed out of a bad position on the ground to take on Paulo Enrique, who recently played in the PFL.
It's hard to know what Enrique, a veteran of 23 professional fights and five dos Anjos fights, was thinking here. He showed little respect for dos Anjos' power and simply tried to grab him instead of actively defending himself. And he went down.
