Mike Tyson's trainer Rafael Cordeiro has no concerns about the soon-to-be 58-year-old fighting Jake Paul, who is half his age.
“I don't think you need to worry about that. We're talking about a two-time world champion,” Cordeiro said on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani. “That guy didn't fight 20 games in two years. He knows how to fight.
“He has fought against the best players in the world,” Cordeiro continued. “When he steps into the ring, he knows what to do. That's nothing new for Mike and this match is no different. He goes in there and tries to knock Jake out from start to finish every day. He's working hard. He'll prove it in July.”
It's one thing for the coach to be confident, but mixed martial arts stars and others criticized the fight, saying Paul shouldn't have fought Tyson at such an old age.
A doctor told The Conversation that he was concerned about Tyson's health in the fight, where Paul, 27, showed considerable punching power.
Stephen Hughes, senior lecturer in medicine at Anglia Ruskin University, writes: “Brain volume tends to decrease in older people.” “This makes the bridging veins longer and more susceptible to rupture.
“Bleeding from these torn veins causes blood to collect and compress the brain. This can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, neurological damage, and even death.”
The question at hand is whether boxing can grant Tyson permission to compete in a sanctioned bout.
Tyson was last seen as a boxer in 2020 when he fought Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match.
There were a lot of licensing issues in that match.
The match against Jones Jr. was initially requested as an official match, but the athletic commission did not approve it.
The bout ultimately fell short of either fighter's record. No headshots were allowed and no winner was declared.
It appears that the Tyson vs. Paul fight, currently streaming on Netflix, will focus on each fighter's record and receive the necessary approvals.
Tyson appears to be in great shape for the fight, likely to prove to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation that he is fit to box Paul in a full eight-round fight.
Paul and Tyson likely chose AT&T Stadium in Dallas as the venue because they believed there would be no problems with the licensing process.
If Tyson was going to struggle to get his license, this fight would have been ripe for Saudi Arabia.
Paul lost to Tommy Fury in February 2023 in Saudi Arabia. The bout was not sanctioned in the United States due to Fury's visa issues.
