Mike Tyson has resumed training and is expected to return to the boxing gym later this month, his representative told USA Today Sports on Wednesday.
The former heavyweight champion was recovering from a recurrence of an ulcer, so his bout with Jake Paul was postponed to November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The 58-year-old Tyson has been working out in recent weeks on strength training and cardio, his agent Andrew Ruff said, adding that the fighter was being treated by gastroenterologist Danny Issa of the University of California, Los Angeles, after his ulcer recurred on May 26.
“Everything is going well,” Ruff said. “The doctors at UCLA are monitoring him very closely. They're very happy with the progress. He'll be back at the hospital at the end of July to start work, and everything is going well.”
“Everything is going well and I've been told he won't have any restrictions. His doctors, especially Dr. Issa, don't think there will be any restrictions at all.”
The 58-year-old Tyson and the 27-year-old Paul were originally scheduled to fight on Saturday, but Paul will instead face Mike Perry, a former mixed martial artist and recent hand-to-hand fighter.
It's unclear how Paul's loss to Perry will affect the Tyson fight, but Ruff said the decision to fight Perry was made by Paul and his manager, Nakissa Vidarian, and was supported by Tyson.
“Everybody's very interested,” Ruff said. “Obviously, there's been a lot of discussion. This is Jake and Nakisa's decision, and Mike supports it 100 percent. We'll see how it plays out. We're watching very intently.”
According to Ruff, Tyson trains in Las Vegas, where he has a home, and in France, where his daughter Milan plays tennis.
His goal while taking more than a month off was to get healthy enough to resume training at full strength.
“So right now it's just focused on getting him healthy so he can play in that fight. He's recovered,” Ruff said. “Health is number one and his doctors are really focused on that and making sure he's in tip-top shape so he can come back completely 100 percent. So the first moment has been focused on our camp making sure he's healthy and ready to go against Jake Paul.”
When is the Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight?
The original bout date of July 20 was postponed due to Tyson's health issues, but the new date has been set for November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
