Mike Perry enters the promotional scene.
On the eve of his boxing match with Jake Paul, the UFC veteran and BKFC star held a press conference in Tampa to announce the creation of Dirty Boxing Championship, a combat sports organization Perry is founding with his team at First Round Management, former Karate Kovacs executive Adam Kovacs and Josh McLean of Kanpai Media.
Perry said the Dirty Boxing Championship will feature bouts under hybrid rules that combine boxing striking with five-ounce gloves and limited ground-and-pound.
“This promotion has been in the works for over a year now and it's something I started because of the success I've had in bare-knuckle,” Perry said. “I feel like there are a lot of great fighters and athletes out there who want to compete in these bouts but don't necessarily want to hang up the gloves and compete in bare-knuckle. There are a few names that come to mind.”
Dirty Boxing Championship bouts will take place in a smaller 18-foot ring with three three-minute rounds, with championship bouts lasting five rounds. All strikes will be allowed, including elbows. A fighter who scores a knockdown will be allowed to continue with ground-and-pound punches, but must remain on both feet. Weight classes are expected to mirror the traditional weight classes in MMA.
Dirty Boxing Championship's first events are expected to begin around September or October. The promotion currently does not have a broadcast deal.
“I think this rule set will be the most exciting for the general fan base that's been assembled,” MacLean said.
Already a face in bare-knuckle boxing, Perry has expressed a willingness to fight for a new organization as long as the match makes sense from a promotional standpoint.
