Florida State has completed its 10th spring practice, and the Seminole offense has put together a series of strong practices to find its rhythm ahead of the 2024 season. Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has taken the next step in his game this offseason, making big throws and explosive plays in recent weeks.
FSU head coach Mike Norvell met with the media after Thursday's practice to talk about the offense's progress and sum up what he has seen throughout the spring ahead of the 2024 Garnet & Gold Spring Showcase on April 20th.
“I thought the offense won the day. I mean, there were a lot of explosive plays, just big runs. I thought we had some connections on big plays. We made some mistakes defensively. Obviously it wasn't our best day. But I thought our defense responded well at the end of practice when we got into third-down situations,” Norvell said. “Offensively, we have to continue to do that. But like I told them, every rep, every play, we need 10 practices. We have to keep pushing the standards in which we operate.”
Spring growth is encouraging, especially for a team that has made many changes to its ACC Championship lineup from a season ago. The Noles will likely have multiple players drafted and will need to replace former FSU star Trey Benson, who is expected to be taken early in the 2024 NFL Draft.
“I see growth. Obviously the players are gaining more confidence in their technique, fundamentals and overall execution,” Norvell continued. “I think we had an explosive group of backs. If you give them space, they'll have a chance to make things happen.”
FSU added Alabama transfer Sean Murphy in the offseason, who spent two seasons at Alabama before landing in Tallahassee. Despite the slow start to spring, Norvell said Murphy had a great day.
“He's been dealing with some minor physical issues and just getting through it, which has kind of limited him for the past week and a half. , was like challenging him to just go out and play. I mean, , don't worry about anything that might be bothering you. Just go out and play it. Put it on display. And I thought he had a great day,” Nobel said.
Another key player for the defense will also be headed to the next level of his career. Georgia transfer Marvin Jones Jr. is expected to replace first-round prospect Jared Verse. The Noses will need Jones to pair up with Patrick Payton to compete with Verse's production.
“He's progressing well. I mean, we feel great about our guys and he's really accelerated, probably the last week and a half, his reactions, his confidence, his steps, everything he's doing. But you see the ability. I mean, he's what we thought he was. ”
The Garnet and Gold Spring Showcase is scheduled for April 20th at 4 p.m. Guest coaches from the Seminoles and 1999 national championship team will be featured.
