University of Michigan football defensive line coach Greg Scruggs has resigned from the Wolverines' program, according to a statement from head coach Sherone Moore.
Scruggs was arrested on March 16 in Ann Arbor on suspicion of driving under the influence.
“I have just received notice that Greg Scruggs is resigning, effective immediately,” Moore said. “As this is a university matter, we cannot comment further.”
Police stopped Scruggs at an intersection at around 2:15 a.m. for turning on his hazard lights.
He was given a field sobriety test and then two breath tests, which recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.16 and 0.17.
Moore confirmed Scruggs' arrest hours after the news became public, pointing out that his 33-year-old assistant had made an unfortunate mistake.
Scruggs was also arrested in 2011, when he was a senior on the Louisville football team, when he drove off the road and hit a utility pole, according to reports.
He was released from the team before the bowl game against North Carolina State.
Before joining Michigan, Scruggs coached at Wisconsin for the 2023 season and spent the year before with the New York Jets.
Now, the University of Michigan is turning to the coaching merry-go-round to find a replacement for its defensive line coach.
