Former Port Isabel football player Breyan Medina is in the middle of training camp for an upcoming flyweight mixed martial arts bout. After a long day at work, Medina trains with Jason Lee and Johnny Garcia at Bare Knuckle Crew (BKC) Jiu-Jitsu in Port Isabel, then heads to Brownsville to train with striking coach Victor Solis at EVO Kickboxing, wrapping up his routine around 10-10:30 p.m. each day.
Two years ago, Medina found himself bored and constantly finding himself in “sticky situations,” so he started going to a jiu-jitsu gym and quickly fell in love with the sport. He then started trying kickboxing, which he also enjoyed.
After two years of training, he felt he was ready to step into the cage to pursue a career in mixed martial arts, and made his debut this past February at the Rise FC 1: The Beginning event in Victoria, Texas, where he faced Carlos Gutierrez in a bout that went the full rounds and Gutierrez won by unanimous decision.
Two months later, Medina made his comeback with a win over Vincent Sandoval at the Tap or Scrap 8 event in Robstown, Texas on April 27. The bout was a fierce battle from the get-go, with Medina finishing the bout by technical knockout with 1 minute, 43 seconds remaining in the first round.
Medina will enjoy home field advantage when he takes on Michael Moylan at the Texas Fight League's MMA & K-1 kickboxing event at the South Padre Island Convention Center on Saturday, July 27. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Medina currently holds a 1-1 record in amateur MMA and according to Tapology.com, Medina is ranked 56th out of 97 active amateur flyweights out of Texas, while his opponent Moylan (1-2) is ranked 61st but is on a two-fight losing streak.
