The crime was committed in a foreign country where the coach had travelled with his students to take part in an international competition. A criminal case has been opened in connection with this incident.
Last year, state police received a complaint from the parents of a boy who alleged he was sexually abused by his coach during an international tournament in March 2023. The victim was 12 years old at the time of the crime.
State police launched an investigation into the incident and arrested the suspect.
During their investigation, police received information about a separate incident that occurred much earlier: They discovered that the coach had sexually abused another boy, then aged 13, in March 2013 while overseas for a tournament.
A search and examination of the suspect's media also revealed one photograph containing child pornography on his mobile phone.
A criminal case has been initiated in connection with the incident.
The suspect, who has never been reported to police before, is currently barred from carrying out his duties as a coach, including being banned from teaching any minors and from approaching certain people.
Having obtained sufficient evidence, the National Police, in accordance with the practice in the Latvian legal system, on 17 May this year, referred the criminal case to the Riga North Prosecutor's Office for the initiation of criminal prosecution against the suspect, whose name has not been made public.
