The season officially ended for Marquette on Friday night, but it was a great third season for Cameron Jones and his Golden Eagles. Marquette suffered an upset loss to the North Carolina State Wolfpack, losing by nine points. Jones scored 20 points but struggled from beyond the arc, making just 3 of 12 shots.
Jones' season is over, and while it may not have ended the way he had hoped, he can now officially set his sights on the 2024 NBA Draft. He is a lethal scorer with a skill set that transfers to the next level and will likely be considered in the first round if the pre-draft process is successful.
He scored 66 points in three games during the NCAA Tournament, showing the ability to get buckets from all three levels. During his regular season, he averaged 17.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 41.4% from 6-point range. Although he's had some bad moments at times, he's developed into a good off-ball mover and can put himself in good looks from the perimeter.
If he's going to reach his limits at the NBA level, he's going to need to do more than just succeed as a scorer. Although Jones has shown talent as a facilitator and secondary passer this season, he totaled just four assists in the tournament. He was disruptive defensively at times throughout the regular season, but was also forced out of position at times.
Either way, Jones is a legitimate NBA candidate and will be a player to keep an eye on in the coming months.
