Meta Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent the summer getting chopped up and discussing cage fights with Elon Musk, but he has embraced a “martial arts worldview.” There is.
This is according to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, who discussed the public perception of Zuckerberg with Forbes in an article published Tuesday. Mr. Ek and Mr. Zuckerberg have known each other for many years.
“When you go into a match, you're not competing against others, you're competing against yourself, right?” Ek said. “You're just trying to become a better version of yourself.”
In August 2022, Zuckerberg spoke about his martial arts journey on an episode of the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, stating that he found the sport both physically and intellectually appealing.
“MMA is perfect to a certain extent because if you're not careful for even one second, you end up in last place,” he said on the podcast.
Zuckerberg, who turns 40 in May, says he particularly enjoys Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At the competition held in California in May, he won a gold medal and a silver medal.
Insider's Jyoti Mann reported in June that Meta's CEO is one of many tech moguls who have recently made the transition from the boardroom to the dojo.
PayPal CEO Dan Schulman has trained in Krav Maga, an Israeli martial art, and said that experience shaped the way he approaches business and life. Joanna Pineda, CEO of Matrix Group International, previously told Insider that practicing Taekwondo and the Korean martial art Hapkido helped her develop mental strength.
Meta is halfway through what the company called its “year of efficiency.” The company made large-scale layoffs earlier this year. Metaverse division Reality Labs' total losses exceeded $40 billion in the second quarter.
A representative for Mr. Zuckerberg did not immediately respond to a request for comment via Meta outside of normal business hours. A spokesperson for Ek declined a request for further comment from Insider.
