Several college football teams joined new conferences.
INDIANAPOLIS — For college sports, July 1 marks one of the most transformative days in history.
The first phase of conference realignment takes effect Monday. What does this mean for the Big Ten?
This changes the outlook for college sports as we know it, and it's a pretty big statement, but teams are relocating and finding new homes.
It all started in July 2021, when Texas and Oklahoma shocked the world by announcing their intentions to move from the Big 12 to the SEC.
Additionally, SMU will be leaving the American Athletic Conference and moving to the ACC.
Monday also marks the end of the Pac-12 Conference as we know it. How does this work and how does the Big Ten fit into it?
The second phase of the conference realignment begins Aug. 2. The biggest impact for the Pac-12 was UCLA and USC announcing their joint intent to join the Big Ten in the summer of 2022.
Then the dominoes continued to fall as Oregon and Washington also decided to join the Big Ten, followed by Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado announcing they would join the Big 12, with California and Stanford joining the ACC.
For IU and Purdue, that means a few new Big Ten opponents.
IU will host Washington this season and then face UCLA in the Rose Bowl, marking the first time IU will play in the Rose Bowl since USC faced O.J. Simpson in 1968. This will be the first time IU and UCLA have met in football.
As for Purdue, there's just one change: They'll host Oregon on Oct. 18. This will mark the fourth time these two teams have met.
That's a lot of information. The most important thing to know is that the Big Ten will officially expand from 14 to 18 teams. There will be no more divisions within the conference. The top two teams will meet in the Big Ten Championship, and Purdue will have a new opponent they haven't faced in a long time.
We'll have more information once Big Ten Media Days arrives, but a new era is upon us in college football.
