It was recently announced that Luis Alberto “El Venado” Lopez (30-2) will face Angelo “El Chinito” Leo (24-1) at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 10. The bout will be broadcast across all ESPN platforms as part of Top Rank's deal with the sports network, and will feature Lopez's IBF featherweight title.
Lopez has been on a roll, winning 13 straight fights since his loss to then-unbeaten Ruben Villa in 2019.
Albuquerque Leo is also on a winning streak, having won four straight since suffering the only loss of his career in 2021 to Stephen Fulton.
Lopez's manager, Hector Fernandez de Cordoba, isn't sure what will happen on fight day, but he believes his player will win.
“This is a tough fight against a former world champion who is very strong and very disciplined in his style,” Fernandez told Boxing Scene..
“I think Venado will have to fight with great footwork. This is a fight that will either be a very easy fight or the toughest fight of his life. Angelo's style is a perfect fit for Venado's footwork. We all know what happened with Joat and with all due respect to Joat, but overall I think Leo is the better fighter.”
Fernandez was referring to Lopez's comfortable unanimous decision victory over Joet Gonzalez on Sept. 15.
Leo last stepped into the ring in April, when he defeated Eduardo Beis by unanimous decision.
