Brazil and Orlando Pride star Marta will retire from international football this year, he said in an interview with CNN Brazil to be aired on Sunday, April 28.
The 38-year-old is Brazil's all-time leading scorer for both men and women with 115 goals and has played in six World Cups.
If Marta is selected to represent Brazil at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she could be competing for the sixth time.
“If I go to the Olympics, I'm going to enjoy every moment. Regardless of whether I go to the Olympics or not, this is my last year with the national team. After 2025, Marta will not be on the national team as an athlete,” Marta told CNN told Brazil.
The legendary forward said she was relieved by the decision and optimistic about the future of Brazil and the young players of the women's national football team.
“This year is the last year for me, but you can already see it here. There is a moment when you have to understand that the time has come. I look at this development with great optimism regarding young athletes. “I am very calm about this,” she added.
Marta has won the FIFA Player of the Year award an unprecedented six times, and no other female player has won the award more than three times, including five years in a row from 2006 to 2010.
She also won the Women's Champions League, the Copa Libertadores Femenina, and won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards for top scorer and best player at the 2007 Women's World Cup.
In 2019, Marta became the first male or female player to score five times in a World Cup, and her 17 goals in a World Cup set an all-time record for men's and women's soccer.
She has won the Copa America Femenina three times, but the only achievement missing from her glittering career is a major world title with her beloved national team. Marta came agonizingly close to her glory three times as a member of Brazil's national team, but in 2007 she lost to Germany in the Women's World Cup final, and she suffered defeat twice in the Olympic gold medal match.
The Olympics will be held in Paris from July 26th to August 11th.
