It can be difficult to make evaluations this early in college football these days, especially given the roster instability brought about by the transfer portal. But with the second transfer portal window mostly slowing down, we now have a pretty clear picture of what this fall's roster will look like.
With that in mind, ESPN's Mark Schlabach updated his college football Top 25 rankings after spring ball with some changes, but for LSU, that didn't mean any moves. Coach Brian Kelly's team was ranked 14th in January, and that remains the case in these rankings.
Schlabach said of the Tigers.
Spring update: With the departure of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jaden Daniels and star receivers Malik Nabors and Brian Thomas Jr. to the NFL, the Tigers will have a new look on offense. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeyer picked up where he left off in the bowl game in the spring game, completing 7 of 7 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. With quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan calling the plays, Nussmeier looked more than comfortable. Transfers Zavion Thomas (Mississippi State) and CJ Daniels (Liberty) showed they are ready to produce this season. LSU coach Brian Kelly will hire former Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker to rebuild a unit that ranked 81st in scoring defense (28 points) and 118th in passing defense (255.9 yards) in 2023. Defensive end Gabriel Reliford, an early enrollee, was a bright spot in the spring. The Tigers lost a lot of pieces, and while it wasn't necessarily a prolific portal class, it did feature some great replacement players they lost in the draft, including receiver Daniels. LSU hopes the numbers are good enough to compete for a playoff spot in year one of the expanded SEC.
