Nick Molina is looking forward to returning to action at Melrose.
The Lowell boxer will face Lucas Alejandro Mignoni in an eight-round super lightweight bout on Saturday, July 27, as part of Boston Boxing Promotions’ Summer Fight Night at Melrose Memorial Hall.
Molina, the current New England super lightweight champion and Boston Boxing Promotions' 2021 “Fighter of the Year,” boasts a 14-1 record with five knockouts. Mignoni is a tough, globetrotting fighter with a 14-7 record with four knockouts. He appeared late last year on a card in Puerto Rico promoted by legendary Hall of Famer Miguel Cotto.
The 24-year-old Molina was originally scheduled to fight last Friday at the Royal in Boston, but the bout was abruptly canceled after his opponent withdrew at the last minute.
The Lowell boxer was last seen on Melrose in April of this year, winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Damien David Marciano (18-13-1, 7 KOs). The 5-foot-8, 135-pound right-handed “Saint Nick” took control early in the bout, knocking Marciano down in the third round.
It was a spectacular return for the local boxer, whose 13-fight winning streak was snapped after he was knocked out by former WBO junior featherweight world champion Jamel Herring on Nov. 7 last year at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.
He will return to Melrose to fight at the same venue for his second time in the ring this year.
“I'm excited to be back in the ring at Melrose,” Molina said. “Lucas Alejandro Mignoni is famous for making weight, showing up and actually fighting, which is more than you can say about some people. I'm looking forward to facing him on the 27th.”
Molina cut his teeth as an amateur boxer at the 2019-20 Golden Gloves at Lowell Memorial Auditorium and has steadily worked his way up the professional ranks.
He had been on a roll until his first defeat, when he won a unanimous decision over Brazil's Alimar Silva at the Great American Boxing Bash II at the Castleton Banquet and Conference Center in Windham, New Hampshire on July 14. He had previously won a unanimous decision over Brandon Higgins for the New England super lightweight title on the night before Thanksgiving.
The Molina-Mignoni matchup is one of several highly anticipated bouts that also include a WBC International heavyweight title bout between Andriy Nowitzki (11-0, 9 KOs) and Keith “Rydell” Mays Jr. (15-2, 14 KOs). Haverhill's Nicky Tejada (7-0-1, 5 KOs) will face New York's Javier Torres. Reading's Jarryd DiGange (2-0, 2 KOs) will face Boston's Bruno Saraiva and Lawrence's Andrew Perez (3-0, 3 KOs) will face Max da Silva.
