WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Emmanuel Carrillo Jr. has been making waves in the boxing world since he started boxing at an early age.
Carrillo Jr. was a standout in the area, winning several amateur championships.
The 19-year-old's hard work and dedication paid off as he qualified for the 2024 USA Boxing National Open in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“Since this is an Olympic year, this National Open was open to all kinds of boxers, primarily amateurs, top ranked amateur boxers in the country. Some of the top boxers in the country We couldn't qualify for the Olympics, so this just gave us an opportunity to showcase our talent at the national level,” said boxer Emmanuel Carrillo Jr. .
Carrillo Jr. split his bout in the US Boxing National Opening Tournament, losing in the semifinal round.
“I competed in the 125-pound weight class and ended up being the No. 2 seed, which was actually worse than the No. 1 seed who was the winner of the Olympic Trials,” Carrillo Jr. said.
After 11 years as an amateur player, he is now taking a big step forward.
“Become a professional boxer. I'm going to get my state boxing license and become a professional boxer,” Carrillo Jr. said.
Carrillo said he and his team will be regrouping to see exactly what weight he will start at for his pro debut.
