The Boston Celtics are NBA champions, the 2024 draft class is over, and now it's time for free agency frenzy. The league has already seen some wild trades early in the 2024 offseason, but things are only going to get even more chaotic when NBA free agency begins on Sunday, June 30 at 6 PM ET.
While deals won't be officially announced until July 6, teams are allowed to negotiate with free agents at the start of the moratorium. This isn't the strongest free agent class, but there seem to be enough desperate teams at the moment that could facilitate a big move.
Paul George seems like the biggest star to move teams. That scenario gained momentum Saturday afternoon when George opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, per Adrian Wojnarowski. George is expected to test the open market, with Wojnarowski reporting he will meet with “teams with cap space and the Clippers” starting Sunday evening. The Philadelphia 76ers are rumored to be making a push for George on the open market, and many other teams could be interested.
Isaiah Hartenstein is another big name to watch in free agency. The 26-year-old center is coming off a breakout season with the New York Knicks, where he offered elite interior defense, efficient scoring and a bit of playmaking. The Knicks would love to keep him, but their payroll is high after signing OG Anunoby to a $212 million contract extension and completing a trade for Mikal Bridges. The market for Hartenstein is wide, with the Oklahoma City Thunder frequently mentioned as a potential acquisition.
Several future Hall of Famers are nearing the end of their careers but are also unrestricted free agents. DeMar DeRozan turns 35 next month and could be leaving the Chicago Bulls after three impressive seasons with the team. James Harden is also considering signing a new contract with the Los Angeles Clippers or another team as he approaches his 35th birthday. Klay Thompson is expected to leave the Golden State Warriors for the first time in his career at age 34.
Other notable free agents include Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tobias Harris, Jonas Valanciunas, Buddy Hield, Kelly Oubre, Tyus Jones and Isaiah Joe.
