Let's take a closer look at the #1 ranked Lincoln Southwest boys soccer team…
Best win: On March 23, they defeated defending state champion Creighton Prep, 3-0.
Most satisfying victory: “In the overtime win against Lincoln Southeast in the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals, we went down twice in the game, tied it with 90 seconds left, and scored with 30 seconds of overtime.” Coach Derek Scheich said. “That could have been a huge turning point for our season and their season. We just found a way to win and haven't looked back since.”
What we are consistently good at: “Right now, we're not scoring a ton of goals on a consistent basis. But we have a solid defense, the No. 1 defense in Class A. We've only conceded eight goals all year. ”
In goal: Senior Dylan Beierman (0.601 goals against average)
Secondary assist: On several occasions, senior Gavin Weiland was the player to make plays that sparked attacks that later led to points.
“In the district final against Grand Island, he had a preliminary assist,” Scheich said. “His passing ability is very good. A lot of times he sees the run and makes the pass.”
Goals you want to see as a coach: “We scored a goal on a really great set piece against Lincoln High School this year,” Scheich said. “Spencer Rose read the situation and started running and Miguel Solano, the player who had the ball, gave him the ball and he scored the goal. It was amazing. It was right out of the training ground. . And that's just the team's goal: win the ball, make quick plays, and break the line.”
Here are the main factors that will determine how far you advance in the state tournament. “Unforced errors are something you want to avoid because it usually comes down to the team minimizing mistakes. And it has to be in your DNA to be willing to suffer and crush it.” Hmm. Running back 30 yards to cover or close down a player. Or continuing to harass the guy with the ball even when your legs are on fire and your lungs are on fire. We have players who are willing to do that.”
