Directly behind Lewis is the battlefield. Prince William County is the favorite to win the title at 11-0 after an impressive road win against Osborn Park last week.
“I didn't think we had a chance to go 11-0,” Bobcats head coach Wesley Homan said. “Last year we had eight seniors. Basically the entire spine of our lineup graduated…I thought we'd be able to score goals and get in games this year, but it couldn't have been better.”
Battlefield's defense, centered around senior Luke Smith, who was named first-team All-Met last spring, has allowed just three goals this season.
“We play defense as a group and we’re very proud of that,” Homan said. “We are always confident that if we hold off the other team, we can get the next goal.”
The football playoffs are just around the corner, and Homan knows his team has the talent to make the postseason. But in the homestretch of the regular season, he wants to see consistency.
“That's the next step,” Homan said. “We have a really, really good stretch where we can be a dominant team. But we have to avoid disappointment. We want to rise to the challenge as best we can.”
