Jose Aldo wants to see his old enemy turn back the clock.
The former UFC featherweight champion is looking forward to Conor McGregor's comeback story at UFC 303 as he gears up for his MMA return at UFC 301. His broken leg is now fully healed and he will be making his Hollywood debut in The Notorious on June 29th against his long-awaited opponent Michael Chandler.
This is a make-or-break fight for McGregor, who returns from the longest layoff of his career and two losses, courtesy of Dustin Poirier. The 35-year-old still exudes confidence in his ability to compete at the highest level, and that will be put to the test against the “Iron” Chandler.
Aldo, who faces a similar scenario against Jonathan Martinez next month, is backing McGregor against Chandler in what could very well be a vintage performance from the Irish superstar.
“I have high expectations for that fight,” Aldo said. MMA Junkie Via translator. “As I always say, I always root for the guys who fought and the guys who will beat me. It just proves that I lost to the best and I lost to the champion. So I hope he can go out there and do well.'' In classic Conor fashion, he's aggressively trying to finish the fight instead of leaving it up to the judges. I'm expecting great things from the game.”
Jose Aldo's words of encouragement for his former rival echo McGregor's words regarding the 'King of Rio's' epic homecoming at UFC 301, the last fight on his current UFC contract.
“Look at Aldo now, it's great to have Jose back,” McGregor said.MMA hour'. “We're really happy to have Jose back…we're looking forward to having him back. He's a very enthusiastic guy, which is always great for the company.”
The former featherweight can now break bread, but it wasn't always that way. McGregor and Aldo had one of the most intense rivalries in MMA history en route to their title unification bout at UFC 194. The young McGregor ended his championship reign after spewing many insults and telling the truth to get inside “Scarface's” head. He ended 2015 with an incredible quick KO in 13 seconds.
