Leonard Miller recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and the Timberwolves beat the Houston Rockets 93-83 on Thursday night in the NBA Summer League at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Miller, last year's second-round draft pick, shot 9 of 17 from the field and had five assists and five steals for the Timberwolves, who improved to 3-1 in Las Vegas. Daishen Nix had 16 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Rob Dillingham and Josh Minot each scored 15 points. Dillingham, the No. 8 overall pick in this year's NBA Draft, had six assists and five rebounds but shot just 6 of 21 from the field.
The Timberwolves' fifth starter, Terrence Shannon Jr., went scoreless for seven minutes and left the game for good. The team said Shannon, the 27th overall draft pick, injured a toe on his left foot.
The Timberwolves led 29-16 after the first quarter and 46-39 at halftime and held those leads for much of the second half. Houston briefly led 61-59 on two free throws by Nate Williams with 14 seconds left in the third quarter, but Jalen Clark made a 3-pointer at the other end and Josh Minot was fouled after a steal and made two free throws to give the Timberwolves a 64-61 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Timberwolves then made five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and slowly pulled away from Houston (2-2), which had 20 points from Reid Sheppard and 15 from AJ Griffin.
