CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (VALLEY CENTRAL) – Edinburg North, Lopez and Progreso all fell one game short of advancing to the state semifinals.
They were the final three teams from the Rio Grande Valley for the 2024 UIL Texas Boys Soccer State Championship.
In Corpus Christi, Progreso had an impressive showing in the Region IV-4A finals. The Red Ants are down four starters after an altercation late in the district semifinal game against La Vernia.
Despite missing four starters, Progreso held on to a zero-point draw against undefeated Boerne for the first 82 minutes of the match.
However, the Greyhounds were able to score a goal from a corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Progreso had one last chance with a corner kick in the final minute of the game. The shot missed the goal. Boerne won 1-0.
The Red Ants finished the season with a record of 27 wins, 2 losses, and 2 draws.
At Brownsville Sports Park, Lopez blocked a late-game penalty kick from San Antonio Southwest in the semifinals to advance to the Region IV-5A final.
The Lobos played Leander Glenn, a team that entered that game with a record of 28-0-1, and gave it their all.
Glenn showed exactly why he was unbeaten, scoring twice before Lopez scored on a second-half penalty.
The Lobos lost 2-1 to Leander Glenn, missing out on a spot in the state semifinals.
Lopez finished the season with a record of 24-3-2.
In San Antonio, Edinburg North advanced to the Region IV-6A finals for the first time since 2017.
The District 32-6A champion faced Austin Vandegrift. The Cougars showed good looks many times throughout the game.
In the end, the Vipers struck at the opportune moment and advanced to the state semifinals with a 3-0 shutout victory.
The Cougars finished the season with a record of 17 wins and 6 losses.
