2024 Korea Olympic Trials
On the third day of the 2024 Korean Olympic qualification trials, another national record has been broken.
23-year-old competing in women's 800m free race Han Da Kyung He finished on the podium with a time of 8 minutes 38.23 seconds. This was more than 10 seconds faster than any other athlete, and Han's time surpassed the Korean standard record of 8:39.06 set in 2019.
Although Han put in a strong performance, she fell short of the 8:26.71 time needed to qualify for the World Aquatics Olympics in Paris.
Kim Soyoung She won the women's 200m IM this evening with a time of 2:13.24. Although she did not qualify for the Olympic QT, she won the bronze medal. She had already set a season-best time of 2:10.36 at last year's Asian Games.
As a reminder, the top two finishers at these trials will qualify for Paris if they meet or beat the World Swimming Olympic qualifying times. However, the Korean Swimming Federation (KSF) High Performance Committee has announced that even if the winner here finishes with a slower time than the OQT, it will already be valid within the period (March 1, 2023 to June 23, 2024). It was decided that if an athlete has achieved a certain amount of time, he or she will be suspended. / She still qualifies for the Olympics.
This means that Kim will be competing in the Olympics for the fourth time, making him the first Korean to achieve the feat.
