One of boxing's most promising prospects, Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis, will return to the ring this Saturday night in New Jersey to face powerhouse Mexican boxer Miguel “Explosivo” Madueno.
Fresh off the biggest win of his career so far in February when he defeated the experienced former champion Jose Pedraza inside six rounds, Keyshawn Davis is likely to soon face off against longtime rival Andy Cruz, who thoroughly defeated Davis in three amateur finals, including the gold medal final at the Tokyo Olympics.
Keyshawn Davis enters this race as an outrageous -1400 favorite to win, while Miguel Madueno comes back at +850 with most bookmakers.
Davis gives it his all on his way to the top
After his majority decision win over Nahir Albright last year, Keyshawn Davis tested positive for marijuana – a result that was later reversed – and said it was a turning point in his career that drew him closer to God and helped him quit marijuana for good.
Clearly, it didn't go unnoticed: Davis looked much sharper in his last two bouts against Jose Pedraza than he did against Albright and Patera, so we may be seeing the best of Keyshawn Davis in the future.
Madueno aims for success in the US
Miguel Madueno started his career 27-0 but found the brakes coming on when he faced Jezreel Corrales in Panama City two years ago.
Despite scoring a quick knockdown early in that bout, Corrales began to overpower the more experienced Madueno in the middle rounds, keeping the younger fighter at bay and winning a fairly convincing decision despite falling back on dirty tactics towards the end of the bout.
That will undoubtedly be the strategy that Keyshawn Davis will employ this weekend in Newark. Madueno has already proven he can outbox twice, in his two losses to Jezrel Corrales and most recently in a November bout against last weekend's Teofimo Lopez opponent, Steve Clagett.
Keyshawn Davis vs Miguel Madueno Expert Predictions
Keyshawn Davis seems to have found a new edge since being stripped of his win over Nahir Albright last year, and he looks more focused and venomous as he looks to make up for lost time in a lightweight title fight.
His victory on Saturday on a card featuring two leading lightweight contenders in up-and-coming Abdullah Mason and current WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson means that if Davis can stand out with another sensational performance here, plenty of opportunities are sure to open up over the next 18 months.
Miguel Madueno's power is unquestionable, but it's not as fearsome as his 90.32% knockout rate would suggest, and that power has been largely lost on him as he's stepped up a gear in recent years.
He was soundly beaten by Steve Claggett last year, and since Keyshawn Davis is far more accurate and sharp than Claggett, Madueno could very well get beaten badly again this time around.
Keyshawn Davis, who continues to rise in the lightweight division, could close out the fight later in this bout, somewhere between the seventh and tenth rounds.
