olympic champion Kayley McKeown won for women 100m backstroke swimming Events at 2024 NSW Open Championship It was held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Center on Saturday.
McCune's time of 57.57 seconds was tied with American Regan Smith for the sixth fastest time in history. She also ranks among McCune's five fastest swimmers, including the current world record of 57.33 seconds, which she set at the 2023 World Aquatics World Cup in October.
The 22-year-old swimmer was followed on the podium on Saturday by Molly O'Callaghan (58.71 seconds) and 2019 World Championship silver medalist Mina Atherton (1:01.42 seconds).
McCune continues to do well. She won the 2024 NSW Open Championships in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:04.21, the second fastest time of the year. It was at the same meet last year that McCune set her current world record of 2:03.14.
McCune also holds the world record for the 50-meter backstroke and is the first woman in history to hold world records in all three backstroke events. All three records were set last year.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, McCune won a bronze medal in the 4x100m mixed medley, as well as gold medals in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, and 4x100m medley events.
The NSW State Open Championships are a key event in the build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to be held in Brisbane in June.
