Katy, Texas. — A family is being hailed as heroes after they tried to thwart an attempted sexual assault at a Katy neighborhood store on Monday.
Han An, his sons Simon and Christian, and his daughter Hannah turned up at their Yongin Taekwondo studio on Fry Road just before 4pm when they said they heard screaming coming from the Cricket Shop next door and at first thought it was a prank.
“I heard a second scream, a horrible scream,” Simon recalled. “It was really loud.”
The Ang family entered the mobile phone store and opened the door to a back room to find a man on top of a young female store assistant.
“The girl came straight up to me and started crying,” Hannah said.
Han said he saw the suspect, Alex Robinson, 20, riding a bicycle outside the store earlier that day. The Anh family said they had been training in martial arts for years but had never needed to use their skills outside the studio.
“It all happened so suddenly,” Simon said. “I still can't believe it.”
Han used his skills to subdue Robinson.
“He grabbed my dad's shirt and twisted it so he couldn't move,” Simon said. “He pushed him into a corner and started attacking him by biting and scratching him.”
Ten minutes later, the Harris County Sheriff's Office arrived and took Robinson into custody, according to the Ang family.
HCSO said Robinson is charged with attempted sexual assault and assaulting Hann.
Despite being hailed as heroes, the Ang family said they don't see themselves as such.
“It's not necessarily heroism,” Simon said. “We're just doing the right thing. A man is on top of a woman and is going to assault her. I mean, what's the right thing to do? Take him down and hold him there until he can be arrested.”
