Redshirt junior edge Justus Boone is slowly returning to the field ahead of the 2023 football season after suffering a season-ending ACL injury.
Being out of action gave Boone a new perspective on life.
“I learned a lot about myself and relied on my spirituality and relationship with God to get through it and find peace,” he said. “As quickly as many great things and great opportunities can be given to you, they can be taken away from you.”
personal growth
Justus Boone has received high praise from head coach Billy Napier. He cited Boone as one of his favorite players he has ever coached.
Boone credits much of his growth as a person to Napier.
“When I first got here, I didn't always have the best crowds,” Boone said. He just kind of stepped on me. I was grateful for that and believed him. I started believing in myself and making the necessary changes. ”
leadership
Prior to the 2023 season, Justus Boone was named one of the team captains.
Regarding being a leader for young players, Boone said: To be honest, I think I'm better for them and better equipped for them. ”
Boone stressed that while he may not be physically back in the game at 100%, he is “100% mentally.”
new number
Boone returns to the game as a new man with a new number 1 on his back.
“First of all, it's an honor,” Boone said. “I wear it every day with pride. I come here every day and try to let everyone know that I'm grateful for my hard work and that I don't take it for granted.” I am.”
back to the game
Boone is excited to get back to practice with his teammates. “It feels so good,” he said. “I'm not completely back and I'm not in touch right now, but I feel great. When I think back to a few months ago, I couldn't even walk, so I'm really grateful.”
When asked about his progress, he said, “I'm a little ahead of my progress, but I'm still cautious and I'm not rushing anything, so I want to be ready when the season comes.”
