Jorge Masvidal is happy with the new BMF champion.
Last weekend, Max Holloway won the honorary title with a stunning last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. And after stopping Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in 2019 to win his first BMF title, Masvidal couldn't be happier. .
“It's really great that Max has that now,” Masvidal said. MMA hour. “I couldn't think of a better mother to embrace that. That's BMF. He understands the code of his BMF. When this bell tolls, any of us here… I have to stand up now.
“This is the greatest shit ever. And after that fight, like you said, he's up 3-2 in the worst-case scenario. In my book, he's Obviously winning the fight. Gaethje had some moments, but he never controlled the fight or won the fight. So for him to do that, that little point, that guy. Become an Olympic sprinter when he points to the ground. Do the opposite. He's everyone's favorite fighter. is every fighter's favorite fighter. I always loved Max.”
But while Masvidal is a fan of Holloway, the same can't be said about the man Holloway took the belt from. Gaethje famously defeated Masvidal's American Top Team teammate Dustin Poirier to win the BMF title, after which Masvidal proposed a matchup between the two if he returned to MMA. Gaethje didn't take too kindly to Masvidal's advances, taking several shots at Masvidal and even losing to Kamaru Usman. And even though Gaethje no longer holds the BMF belt, Masvidal is still interested in the fight.
“That guy is like Homer Simpson,” Masvidal said. “I don't want to talk too much trash about him because he's just been through so much. I hope our paths cross in the UFC. This would be a very good comeback fight for me. It's an easy fight for me. He's literally just walking forward and eating shots, no head movement or anything. That's definitely the guy I want to stick my fist into.”
Despite his harsh words, Masvidal insists he and Gaethje are irreconcilable. He simply thinks 'The Highlight' will be a good opponent for his return from retirement.
“Nothing personal,” Masvidal continued. “Obviously, he's a little personal about me picking and stuff, but I want to bust Gaethje's face in the face. He might never be the same again, so this Let me recover from that. It's a war he went through, and on top of that, he got fucked up and executed. I mean, Gaethje can say whatever he wants, but I don't have anything to say about it. I won't say it. But what if our paths cross? I'll lighten up that mother.”
Masvidal retired from MMA in 2023, but although he ended his retirement in January, it is still unclear whether he will return to the cage. Meanwhile, 'Gamebred' has another fight on the horizon as he faces Nate Diaz in a 10 round boxing match on June 1st at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
